Give the BUT a kick in the BUTT

We all want stuff in our lives. We all have dreams for that perfect life we’ve always wanted to live but, it’s always the ‘but’ that comes in the way. At times, life seems to be drowning in a sea of ‘BUTs’. How many times have we said or heard people say:

‘I want that house but, I don’t have the money for it.’

‘I really want to go for that dream holiday but, I don’t have the time.’

And the best one I heard recently – ‘I want peace of mind but, I can get that only after two years- after I retire.’

We all feel, or rather believe that we have all the time in the world to go get what we want. ‘The’ day for most people never seems to come. I was watching the movie – ‘The Patriot’ the other day. For those who haven’t watched the movie, it’s a movie made on the American war of independence. Apart from the bloodshed and the feeling of patriotism that the movie brought out, it was the character of the protagonist ‘Benjamin Martin’ that left me awe-struck. The character was similar to that of Bhagat Singh’s. Apart from the awe that the character left me with, there was a thought that stuck in my head all night after that. This guy had no guarantee of his life. His name could be written on the next bullet fired from the gun of any of the so called ‘read coats’ (British soldiers). He couldn’t even ensure his family’s safety. But he had a dream – a dream of seeing his country free. He had a million BUTs that could have stopped him too but, he chose to go beyond them. He didn’t really give himself a choice.  We unfortunately have the luxury of that choice and we all graciously become victims to that choice.

I forgot about all this after I got up. However, in the next 48 hours something drastic happened that has etched these thoughts in me forever. March 11th, I came back home from work and switched on the news. A ‘Breaking News’ was being flashed about the earthquake that hit Japan and consequently triggered the tsunami which not just caused the death of thousands of people, but triggered many more catastrophes in the country. Thousands of lives had been lost and thousands of dreams being left unfulfilled. God knows how many of those dreams, if fulfilled could change the face of mankind.

‘Who knows which part of the world would the next catastrophe hit? Am I gonna still sit waiting for that day to come or make our lives worth living?’ – Thoughts like these rattled my head as I saw the pictures being flashed on the television set. Not that I am gonna start living my life in paranoia but, I chose today to fulfill every dream that I have – big or small. I may not have the resources to achieve all of them right now. But, I will start working towards it today.

Somebody recently told me, ‘Stop crying over small little problems in life and invent a problem worthy of your life just like Gandhi and Bhagat Singh had.’ – just like Benjamin Martin had.

To conclude my post, I invite you guys today to give the but a kick in the butt and go ahead and live your dreams full on. Do share with me the dreams you would like to take on in life. Also, do leave your views and feedback in the comment section.

Have a great day,
